Riv, I'm just taking a wild stab without checking any sources, but is this Hurin speaking to Morgoth? Can't think of anyone whose outlook and demeanor could possibly have been bleaker!

Ack! Of course -- its Denethor to Gandalf! The full quote is:
Here's the next "Who Said It?" (Level 1)
I checked all the battles I could think of in LOTR and couldn't find this quote, but completely forgot about the battle of wills between Gandalf and Denethor! A GREAT question, Riv! Kept us all stumped for a while! Then, Mithrandir, you had a foe to match you . . . . For myself, I have long known who is the chief captain of the hosts of the Dark Tower. Is this all that you have returned to say? Or can it be that you have withdrawn because you are overmatched?
Here's the next "Who Said It?" (Level 1)
I could eat anything in the wide world now, for hours on end -- but not an apple!

I know that this was one of the dwarves, after they escaped from Thranduil's caves in apple barrels. But I'll have to guess which one: maybe Fili/Kili, since they seemed to be the only ones with senses of humor?
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Right you are, Merry! It was Fili. Here is the full quote:
Your turn!I hope I never smell the smell of apples again! . . . My tub was full of it. To smell apples everlastingly when you can scarcely move and are cold and sick with hunger is maddening. I could eat anything in the wide world now, for hours on end -- but not an apple!
