No serinde, unfortunately it is the wrong place, wrong time, and wrong species of speaker.

For this one you have to think of a dark time in a desterate place and someone whose demeanor and outlook is as bleak as can be. The speaker is a man, but he is not speaking to men.

Riv, I'm just taking a wild stab without checking any sources, but is this Hurin speaking to Morgoth? Can't think of anyone whose outlook and demeanor could possibly have been bleaker!

I checked all the battles I could think of in LOTR and couldn't find this quote, but completely forgot about the battle of wills between Gandalf and Denethor! A GREAT question, Riv! Kept us all stumped for a while!

I know that this was one of the dwarves, after they escaped from Thranduil's caves in apple barrels. But I'll have to guess which one: maybe Fili/Kili, since they seemed to be the only ones with senses of humor?

Philipa, it sounds to me to be a little too profound for the Hobbit. The use of 'thou' and 'thine' lead me to think it is Valar-speak.

I have read this quite recently.....in The Silmarillion, I'm sure: it is spoken to Melkor....must be by Manwë...but I can't think of the exact context.

Chrissiejane, you're right. It's when Melkor decided he wanted to be the ruler of Arda, but Manwe put a stop to that--for the time being!
