Another important "divided" kingdom was the Roman Empire, but it was divided into East and West. It has been mentioned that Byzantium and the Western Empire were possibly the model for the culture of Gondor -- Italy meets the Middle East.

Yes - he envisaged the Sothern Kingdom, Gondor, as being in the same location as modern Italy, didn't he?
Merry wrote:Were they called 'upper and lower' or were 'northern and southern' ever used?
Both - but more usually they were called 'upper and lower'.

He certainly does seem to have drawn from many sources!

Just noticed: it's Midsummer's Eve tonight!
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

It's no hardship to see it again, is it? :D

In a funny sort of way Aragorn and Arwen are our King and Queen. The King and Queen of our hearts and imagination. Long may they rule!

I have one of those Gondor flags with the White Tree to proclaim my citizenship. (Haven't flown it outside yet, but one day . . .)

On-line somewhere--can't remember. They were selling all kinds of LOTR flags--elvish, Rohan, Haradrim, even orc flags--now who would buy one of those? I'll search around to see if I can find them again.

Edited to add: Here they are: http://www.lotrfanshop.com/lotrshop/flags.asp

I checked at Tolkientown and they no longer offer them there.

These are the same banners that they hang at the Art Exhibition at Moreton in Marsh. You can see them in the photos that marbretherese and I took :D . The Tolkien Society display at Sarehole too!

I wondered where they'd got them from. They look fantastic hanging up!

Hey - you can also buy an Aragorn bobble-head  .

I've also seen LOTR MiniMates--they're pretty cute!
