Thank you all for looking in, your comments, and praise. This one is indeed a gem, not only because of its rarity (both in number that I know of and its extraordinarily uncommon format), but because of the manner in which I acquired it (from a fellow collector who happened to stumble upon it in a box of fanzines that he had purchased.) It was simply wonderful that he thought of and offered it to me (for a rare fanzine that I had in my possession from another purchase that I had made.) And I, too, am very pleased that I can now offer the monthly illustrations of these rarities. After July, its illustrations will be found in its "regular" entry. In this manner, I will slowly but surely get all of the monthly illlustrations documented.

Thanks, Parmastahir, that's an interesting one - I always wondered what the short-lived cartoon version of LoTR looked like. A cross between Disney and all those 1980's TV cartoons, by the looks of things! I suspect that Tolkien would have been horrified, particularly by the abridged version of the story that accompanies each month. Not sure about the idea of Boromir as a Viking either, but it's an interesting view of Middle Earth. On the whole I'm glad PJ ended up with the definitive film version

Now I've seen the calendar I've realised that at some point I must have also seen the film as all the shots are really familiar! I think I must have wiped it from memory...

It's really nice to see a collection of Michael Hague's work! I've seen some of them before, but not all of them. I love the eagles (March). Beorn (April) makes Gandalf look very Hobbity even with his hat! That's the one of his I'm probably most familar with. Actually, now I see it, my favourite is Brand firing the arrow at Smaug (August).

Thanks for visiting and noting those non-working URLs. It's amazing how the lack of two little letters causes a failure. I corrected them and they now work. Glad you like this one. Michael Hague's work is truly his own. It has a Renaissance feel to it.

My favorite is Elrond recalling the Elder Days. This artist has an interesting style. Iolanthe, it's been a while since you did an artist report for us. Got any free time?

Alas, no. That's one thing I don't seem to have! At least not for the next month or so...

His style is very reminiscent of late Victorian, early Edwardian illustration with his use of penwork and wash (at least, I'm assuming that's what he uses). It reminds me of early Arthur Rackham.

Lovely, but I must say the illustration of Arwen and King Elessar made me laugh. The look on the King's face seems to say, "Well, I'm in trouble now."

That one wasn't a favourite of mine either. But part of that (for me) is the silly helmet that Tolkien put poor old King Elessar in.
