Close, librislove, but it's not Gandalf
"Torment in the dark was the danger that I feared, and it did not hold me back.
But I would not have come, had I known the danger of light and joy."

This time I looked it up, instead of relying on memory
--Aragorn says this to Eomer at the end of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
Many live who deserve death; some die who deserve life--can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be so quick to deal out death in judgment. Even the wisest cannot see all ends.

No,no--I meant I missed the last one because I thought I knew it, and did not look it up--and I should have known better. Believe me, I don't know all the quotes from memory!
My LOTR is right next to the computer.
Quote will follow later, folks!

Variations on "Don't be afraid," occur many times in LOTR--but whose utterance of "Fear not!" completely changes the way he is perceived?

I'm doing this from memory, librislove, but I think this is Aragorn, paddling through the Argonath. There are several of these transfigurations in LOTR; it would be interesting to collect them all!
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Good on ya, Merry! I once did a bit of research into this concept, which occurs with Aragorn several times, with Gandalf, and with Frodo as well--I'm sure there are others. In the case of Aragorn at least, it seems to be part of the mythos of the hero. Your turn.

Good question--her change certainly seems opposite to that of Aragorn and Gandalf, but akin to what happens to Frodo at the Crack of Doom--hmmm.
I'll have to think...
now see what you've done!
