'Rings true': good pun! Is Aragorn the only character to transfigure without the possession of a Ring?
'But his life is charmed, or fate spares him for some other end.'
Who said it and about whom?
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

I can see the reason for your guess, serinde, but no on both counts.

Okay, time for a clue! Both the speaker and the person spoken about were Men.
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

A wild guess on the fly--Eomer said it of Aragorn?
Many live who deserve death; some die who deserve life--can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be so quick to deal out death in judgment. Even the wisest cannot see all ends.

Aragorn's life is certainly charmed, librislove, but no. Guess again!

Right! I found it when I was skimming around looking for info on Faramir for our on-going Boromir/Faramir argument in another thread.

Your turn--
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

OK--Who said "There's no longer even any bad sense in it." ?

I was going to guess that this was Treebeard about Saruman, but last night, by coincidence, I read the chapter that contained this quote. It was Farmer Maggot about Saruman's actions in the Shire. At least Saruman was consistent!

Who said, "His wish is to me a command"? (Extra points for naming whose wish is being talked about!)

for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.
