Who sang?
Tall ships and tall kings
Three times three,
What brought they from the foundered land
Over the flowing sea?
Seven stars and seven stones
And one white.
Extra points ...

Who was it sung to and where?

Gandalf was singing it to himself, but Pippin over-heard him.

Maedhros

What was his father-name and what did it mean?
What was his mother-name and what did it mean?
What was his epessë and what did it mean?
“…..suddenly above him far and faint his song was taken up, and a voice answering called to him. Maedhros it was that sang amid his torment.” The Silmarillion, Chapter 13: Of the Return of the Noldor

Oh, my, it seems we have ignored the trivia questions for too long. Apologies, Shieldmaiden! But I have to admit that these questions are too hard for me without some research. Is anyone else an expert on Maedhros?

shieldmaiden! I've finally had some time to look this up--took long enough, didn't it? This truly merits the name of 'trivia'!

father-name: Nelyafinwe (Finwe the Third)
mother-name: Maitimo (well-shaped one, ahem! )
epesse: Russandol (copper-top, because of his reddish hair)
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

My goodness Merry you must have really worked at those. Having been locked out of MeJ for so long I had no idea how tough these trivia questions had gotten.

To Shieldmaiden I bow down to you.

Hope this is not cheating: I googled it and came up with one of those special Wikis! I'm not sure where this stuff is in the primary sources.

Cheating? For goodness sake women no one will know all the answers off the top of their heads. I've used the net for answers occasionally too. It's all about the fun of knowing or doing research to learn something new right?

 I do try to answer them from memory when possible, but this kick-ass question had been dormant for too long! Time for us to move on. If we don't hear from shieldmaiden by this weekend to verify the answers, I'll post a new question.

Sorry, Merry .... I've been very remiss in getting back to you. You are correct. :D

Okay, okay! Forgive the delay: I've been writing poetry!

Here's an easy one: what was Bilbo's mother's maiden name?
