Sorry to be late to the discussion! I particularly enjoyed the sort of geometric nature of Smaug, RR--lots of life and energy coming from something that required a certain amount of measured control to make.

I enjoyed looking at your blog, too, Philipa. I took a class in printmaking way back in college--most people in my major took their required art class in the form of art history, but I decided that it would be good to actually have the experience of trying to make art. The class was full of art majors and, compared to them, I wasn't good, but I did learn to appreciate the art form and I know what you are doing in making your blocks--it's hard!--and I like your results. (My two art classes ruined my bid to graduate summa cum laude, but I have never regretted that!)
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Thank you for the compliment Merry. And the story of yourself and discoveries in art. :D

I think you made the right decision, Merry. Learning about something through a practical skill is a good life-balance to all that head work!
Now let the song begin! Let us sing together

Have wanted to do this piece for a long time and could never get the vision to come together until now. I write about it here on my new RRA blog.

THE HALL OF FIRE!!!! YAYYYYYY! This is lovely, Riv. I see the Great Hearth, the smaller alcoves down the sides (probably each with their own fires at the back, but we can't see them because of the perspective), the roof open to the wind, sun, moon, and stars, and the pools down the middle.

Beautiful!!

I love this format! Everyone sees things differently. :D The pools down the middle are actually designed to be seating in the round for the story telling and songs.

lovely colours and great perspective, Riv!

Working on a new piece today. You'll be happy to know it is Tolkien themed. It's been in my mind now for awhile but my drawing abilities are not up to snuff to do exactly what I wanted to do. I thought of a different variation of the subject matter so I'm going for it. You'll have to wait till later though to see the results. :P

Definitely looking like Caradhras here in the midwest! Starting to understand why Moria looked good. :(

Snowed all day here today too. We got about 8 inches or so. That big storm is suppose to hit later tonight. As long as we don't loose power I'll be happy.

So here is my Tolkien themes print. After Goldberry's water lily I thought I'd work on something from The Hobbit. I call it The Dragon and the Thrush. You can read about the process and such on my blog. :)
