Gwaihir the Windlord carried Gandalf three times:

1. From the top of Orthanc( where he escaped from Saruman) to Rohan where he found Shadowfax)
2. From Durin's Tower at the top of Zirakzigil( where he fought the Balrog of Moria) to Lothlorien
3. From Mount Doom (rescuing Frodo and Sam) to Gondor?

Ah but ladies there is a fourth and earlier time the Lord of the Eagles has carried Gandalf. In the Hobbit as the dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf are caught up in trees to escape goblins and wolves. They are rescued by the eagles.

And lets not forget that it was Gwaihir's father, Thorondor who bore the body of Fingolfin's body from Morgoth's wolves.

Thanks everyone for the extra information. Soooooo my go!

This question concerns previous posts on the subject. Should be easy, yes? :D

Which city did the smiths, who wrought the "Rings of Power", come from and what region was it the capital of?

Of the history of the Mirdain, the jewel smiths of Eregion, much is fragmented. What is known is that Celebrimbor began to build the chief city of Eregion, Ost-in-Edhil in 2nd Age 750. The forging of the rings of power began and by 1500 the One Ring had been forged in Mount Doom.

Menelmacar forbode the Last Battle and was created by Varda and Ilmarë was the Handmaid of Varda.

I hope I understod the last part of your question correctly Bruce.

I was looking for the Melenvagor, Swordsman of the Sky, and Elbereth as she was known to the Elves. Gandalf belonged to her as opposed to Aule the Smith to whom Sauron and Saruman served. We just finished reading the chapter, Three is Company, where Tolkien uses the Menelvagor as a motif to the War of The Ring. Although great peril looms over Middle Earth, both servents are at work, those for good and those who would use their power of creation to dominate and enslave.

Well...

Menelmacar is Menelvagor
Varda is Elbereth

But...Gandalf sure in the heck isn't Ilmarë.

My memories of them are obviously from The Sil. :D
