I don't know how to reproduce my little squeal of appreciation here! :D

My favorite part, of course, has to be the dwarves' singing: who knew they'd like gregorian chant! Did you notice, as well, that Bilbo does appear to have remembered his pocket handkerchief?

And then there is Thorin . . .
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Just looked at it again: not his pocket handkerchief, probably the contract with the dwarves. I'm getting too old to watch these quick-flash videos!

You know, what will be fun (among other things, of course) is to see some of the more cartoonish dwarves evolve into real characters.

You know Merry, as I watched the dwarves start to chant that song and realized it was straight out of the book, I felt that same feeling that I have had all these years that it is a magnificent story and prelude to LOTR ... and is definitely not a children's story the way PJ is telling it. :clapping: :clapping:

Maybe this will be more like what Tolkien came to wish the story had been, since he said later on that he regretted the childish nature of some of his writings. He didn't think people should 'write down' to children and that children can understand more than we give them credit for. I've come to agree with some of his points.

Yay! Yay! YAYYYYYYYY!! Martin Freeman is FABULOUS as Bilbo, just as I KNEW he would be! And how AMAZING is it to see Ian McKellan's Gandalf again! And Cate Blanchett's beautiful, magical, and yes, slightly deliciously creepy Galadriel! And to see Bilbo in Rivendell, looking at the shards of Narsil. And to hear the Dwarves SINGING in those deep, rich, sonorous voices! And Andy Serkis' splendidly perfectly nasty Gollum!!!!!

Yes! Yes!!! YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

I have to say something about those ponies--they are so perfect that it's hard to believe that they are real! We'll need to steel ourselves to the possibility that they will be Smaug's breakfast some day.

Over at TOR.n, Demosthenes has made some extrapolations about what we'll see in the Hobbit movie based on the trailer. Most of it is pretty predictable, but he thinks that, to be continuous with the LOTR movies, the trolls in Hobbit won't talk. There's a bit of discussion about that, as you would imagine! Would that change the text too much?
