Yes, I get it now: he threw stones!
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Re: Tolkien Trivia
I think it's close enough, Michka, although 'killer whales' are orcas, not orcs! Tolkien translates them as Foe-Hammer and Goblin-cleaver, so you got it.

Re: Tolkien Trivia
I don't know the answer, but I think I can translate this question: What did Oin and Gloin lose?
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Re: Tolkien Trivia
I'm not as familiar with The Hobbit as I am with the LOTR, and these questions are making that even clearer to me!
And today I don't have time to skim through the book to find the answer, but maybe someone else knows it. Here's Michka's reformulation of the question: An object was lost by Oin and Gloin; what was it?
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Re: Tolkien Trivia
Michka, I can't find anything about Oin and Gloin losing a particular object. However, in the chapter "Roast Mutton," on the nasty rainy night in which Bilbo and the Dwarves encounter the three Trolls, Oin and Gloin, who were the best in the company at making fires, were unable to light a fire in the rain. Perhaps the French translation indicates that they had lost a tinder box or a flint or some other such object used to light fires? At any rate, in the English original, they are simply unable to light a fire that night. In fact, Oin and Gloin quarrelled over this and eventually began fighting about it.
Does this satisfy your question?

Re: Tolkien Trivia
Interesting, Michka! I re-read that chapter this morning, and I don't find any reference to a lost lighter in the English original. Wouldn't it be a fascinating study for a polyglot to examine translations of The Hobbit and LOTR and make note of additions and changes such as this one?
Here is my question:
