As I recall in a fair place named Nan Elmoth, and later they would settle Doriath. Melian also created someting essential to the 3rd Age.

I have got a goody for you..especially in light of Halloween.

I am the only dragon that was not slain, unlike my less fortunate cousins, I did happen to loose more than just my dignity. Who am I?

This a a level 2.5 you need to do a little thinkig outside the box but its found in the books.

Fell enough for his kind, I suppose, and as equally full of himself.

Well done ElessarsLady. I rather think that story of Farmer Giles of Ham was very funny, illustrating a very humorous side of JRR not ordinarily seen in his other works.

I agree with you bruce...the story of Farmer Giles of Ham was very funny and definitely showed Tolkien's sense of humor...

Level Two...

How were Elven maps oriented and why?

EL, weren't the maps oriented to the East because that was where "Paradise" was?

Methinks...perhaps... :-k

Sorry RR but maybe a bit of clarafication is needed...by oriented I mean the placement of directions on the Elven maps...(bottom, top or right or left side) also there was a specific reason for this placement...

I am going to hazard the guess the maps where orientated to the left or to the west. My logic being that when Faramir held dinner with Frodo, he and his men stood and faced west, to the memory of Numenor. The Maps that Bilbo copied in Rivendel might have the same orientation, from the West from where the Elves left the blessed realm and came into Middle Earth.
Then again I tried Map-quest and found the directions quite complicated.

Since you partially came up with the answer and since this question has been long standing bruce....I will give the answer and ask you to post the next one...

The Elven maps were oriented with the West always on top out of respect for the Valar...

Your go bruce...
