They were the Noegyth Nibin, the race of speaking people who appeared in Beleriand after the departure of the Calaquendi but before the appearance of any other intelligent race. Persecuted by the Sindar and the Green-Elves, they were driven into hiding. They discovered and delved the first caves of Nargothrond. Mim, who features in the story of Turin Turambar, was one.
And yes, I did have to look that up in my "Complete Tolkien Companion". Thanks Iolanthe for the useful birthday present!!!

OK, this is a level 1.5:
Born in Ossiriand, on the isle of Tol Galen. Lived in Menegroth with my family and died in battle there. Only one of my family survived. Who am I?

Bruce, are you referring to Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, and one of his fellow Balrogs? Gothmog and Ecthelion of the Fountain killed each other in the square of the King. The other Balrog was dispatched by Glorfindel of the House of the Golden Flower, who also perished. Maeglin the traitor was cast from the walls of Gondolin by Tuor.
