Hmmm . . . Is this a Level 3 question, Bruce, requiring access to materials beyond The Hobbit, LOTR, and The Sil? The only account of the Fall of Gondolin that I have access to right now is the one in The Sil, which only mentions Ecthelion slaying Gothmog. I'll have to check other sources when I get home from work.

Edited to add: OK, I'm home now! In the longer account of the Fall of Gondolin in The Book of Lost Tales Part II, Ecthelion also fells several goblin captains, including Orcobal their "chiefest champion." Then the account continues to claim that Ecthelion killed THREE Balrogs, until his shield arm was severely wounded by a whip. Then, Ecthelion and Tuor had to withdraw because of the arrival of a dragon. Tuor carries away the wounded Ecthelion and revives him at the Great Fountain just in time for the great duel with Gothmog.

Does that complete the answer, Bruce?

Well done indeed. I am almost tempted to mimic the game show host of Jepordy, Alex Trebeck, "I am sorry we were also looking for the time of day and it had to be in the form of a question."
Its your turn now Lindariel.

Hee! Thanks, Bruce!

Here's a Level Two question. What is the significance of the name Mormegil?

I'm looking for the more familiar name associated with Mormegil and what it means.

Mormegil means 'Black sword' the name given to Turin by the Elves of Nargothrond. Turin's black sword's name was Anglachel or Gurthang.

I can answer part of this: Tom Bombadil!
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

The personage with the yellow boots and the blue jacket was also known as Forn and Orald. His titles were: Eldest and Master.
We had a lively discussion about how Bombadil was different from the the wizards and how the Professor used both he and the Ents and other earth powers as older and some how beyond the plain of everyday life on Middle Earth. Any takers for a new thread?

You're both correct! I guess you can decide between the two of you who will take the next turn.
