Bruce, since no one has volunteered to answer your Hobbit question, I'll give it a go.
Master Elrond held up Thorin's map and the white light of the midsummer's eve crescent moon revealed the following: "Stand by the grey stone when the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole."
He also explained that, "The dwarves invented them [moon-letters] and wrote them with silver pens . . . . These must have been written on a midsummer's eve in a crescent moon, a long while ago."

“Therefore I say: Eä! Let these things Be! And I will send forth into the Void the Flame Imperishable, and it shall be at the heart of the World, and the World shall Be.”

OK, let's stay with the category of writing and runes. This is probably a level 2 - 3 question.
What is Tengwar? When was it invented? Who invented it and who perfected it?

The Endless stair was the winding stair that went from the depths of Kazahdum to the peak of Zirakzigil. It was built was in the First Age under the rule of Durin the Deathless, and the tower that stood upon its peak was named Durin's Tower, upon what is also translated as Silver Point.
The bridge at Kazadum was broken by Gandlaf 23 January III 3019. The Balrog and he fought on those stairs until they reached the peak of Zirakzigil where Gandalf threw down his enemy and smote his ruin apon the mountain side. The Balrog and in all likelyhood the stairs came to their end the 25 January III 3019.
