Level 1 question (in that it can easily be looked up):

What are the six major mountain ranges of Middle-earth, in both Elvish and Common Speech, please?

White Mountains:Ered Nimrais
Ash Mountains: Ered Lithui
Misty Mountains: Hithlaeglir
Grey Mountains: Ered Mithrin
Blue Mountains: Ered Luin
Mountains of Shadow: Ephel Dúath

Those are the ones that made sense to me as 'mountain ranges', RR (Geography Queen!). Before I looked at the maps, I hadn't realized the color theme nor the interesting Elvish connections.

Okey Dokey...

Name as many of the walled cities/edifices/encampments of Middle-earth as you can. I can think of about nine right off the bat.

Bonus Points: Which are the two that appeared not to be made of stone?

Okay, maybe this can be a group effort? I'll start us off with the painfully obvious: Minas Tirith is surrounded by a wall, which is surrounded by the Pelennor, with is surrounded by the Rammas Echor. I'm not sure what the Rammas Echor is made of, but I've never imagined it as stone.

Isn't Edoras surrounded by a wood barracade/wall thingy?

And what about Helm's Deep. That's an ediface/fortification thing. /movie Pippin.

Does the wall need to be man-made? If not, would Mordor/Barad-Dûr qualify too? It doesn't have man-made walls, but you have to go through a gate to get in (or outrun a nasty spider and go in the backdoor

).

Then there's Orthanc of course...

There must be some kind of barrier around Bree, since there is a gate in it to enter town.

Edited to add: I remember now--there is a hedge around the town, right?

I am so new to this and certainly not a scholar.
If I understand Riv's question correctly I think 2 of the encampments, etc not made out of stone, The Shire Homes, and the Prancing Pony.
If not right, it's back to hitting the books.

Sorry to weigh in late here. I think we are collectively getting there. First, to answer Airwin's question...it does seem that most of the walls were man (or other being

) made.

Correct answers so far are:

Orthanc
Minas Tirith
Edoras
Helms Deep
Mordor/Barad-dur

Bree: Bonus points because it was surrounded by a living hedge and dike.

Hints for the final three that I am thinking of...

One is another very evil place.

One is a gloriously beautiful place.

The second one that is surrounded by a living wall is actually from The Hobbit and not LOTR.

Ok, I'm thinking of these:

Minas Morgul (very evil)?

Valinor (surrounded by water and only accessible to elves?)

Thranduil's Woodland Realm (seem to remember that it had a "magic" gate)?

The only other one I can think of is Lothlórien, being the other gloriously beautiful place.
