A level 1 (i think); who said:
Here's the Gate, and it looks to me as if that's about as far as we are going to get.

That is, of course, Sam -- and what would the Gaffer think!

Here's mine:

Who says: (perhaps a Level 2)
Well, they are gone. We cannot find them or catch them; so that if they do not return of their own will, we must do without. We started on our feet, and we have those still.

Serinde, I read that not too long ago. It was Aragorn after Hasufel and Arod took off near Fangorn Forest.

This is a level 1. Who said this and when:
"For the world is changing: I feel it in the water, I feel it in the earth, and I smell it in the air. I do not think we shall meet again."

I knew when the Fellowship film came out that Treebeard and not Galadriel said this, but it took awhile to find the location

Treebeard says it to Galadriel & Celeborn at Isengard, in the chapter called 'Many Partings'

Here's my puzzle:
Well? Why did you do that? Worse than anything your friends could have said! You have put your foot in it! Or should I say your finger?

Does Aragorn says it to Frodo in the Prancing Pony?
Now let the song begin! Let us sing together
Of sun, stars, moon and mist, rain and cloudy weather...

Yes, that is Strider greeting the now-visible 'Mr. Underhill'

Merry Christmas, eh?

I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and haven't eaten so much you can't think  !

This is maybe a level 2 question. Who said this and about whom:

'But do not expect me to wish you health and a long life. You will have neither. But that is not my doing. I merely foretell.'

That was Saruman to Frodo after the Wizard had been ousted from Bag End. Typical Saruman: a fragment of truth distorted into a lie for cruel effect.

That quote comes just after what I always think is the most heart-breaking line in the whole story. It always gets me a bit teary when I think about it. Staying the hands of the hobbits who want to kill Saruman, Frodo says: "He was great once..." The ineffable sadness of squandered potential. And that Frodo was, even then, with all that Saruman had done, prepared to give him the chance of finding reformation, is for me one of his finest moments - eclipsed only by his offer to take the Ring to Mordor at the Council of Elrond.

Anyway, enough of my waffle! If I have understood the rules of this game aright, it now falls to me to nominate a quotation for identification. (Apologies if I've misunderstood.)

This is, I think, quite an easy one, but I do love it so!
Who said, to whom and on what occasion: "I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil."?

This is said by Gandalf at the Final Parting, at the Grey Havens. It is the end of the fellowship on Middle-Earth; Gandalf and Frodo and Bilbo are sailing into the West. Sam, Merry & Pippin must ride back to the Shire.

So, (level 2) who says:
Verily, that way lies our hope, where sits our greatest fear. doom hangs still on a thread. Yet hope there is still, if we can but stand unconquered for a little while.
Happy New Year, eh? Serinde
