There is news today about two Tolkien artists:

For John Howe fans in the San Diego area, the John Howe documentary "John Howe: There and Back Again" will be screened at the Comic-Con 2006 International Independent Film Festival in San Diego on on Sunday, July 23 at 2:05pm. The Festival itself runs from July 20th - 23rd.

concerning John Howe and his art :
STRASBOURG, Alsace, France, DEC. 16, 2006

I'll be signing books (and whatever is thrust under my nose) in Strasbourg from 14h30 to 16h30 this Saturday the 16th, at a new bookshop called KAO BANG, dedicated exclusively to fantasy, 34 rue du Jeu des Enfants, 67000 Strasbourg. (That's in the centre of town, a few minutes from the Place Kleber and about 10 minutes from the train station.)
VERY exceptionally, there will be both HarperCollins poster sets for sale: IMAGES OF MIDDLE-EARTH and MYTH & MAGIC. (For as long as they last.)

What a wonderful event that would be!

This made me think: does anyone have any Tolkien art (either by the Professor himself or others, either originals or reproductions) displayed in their home?

As a matter of fact, Merry, I just acquired two lovely Tolkien-inspired prints through the V-W Marketplace/Zazzle that arrived by mail today. They are none other than "Tolkien's World" and "Gandalf Returns" by our very own Iolanthe! I am absolutely delighted with them and will be framing them very shortly to hang in my home office, where I do my Tolkien-inspired creative writing.

Iolanthe, I have every intention of acquiring copies of anything you make available through Zazzle. I just LOVE your evocative/symbolic style. VERY inspiring! The prints are absolutely lovely!

I would dearly love to acquire prints of the Cor Blok paintings as well. I really like them!

What a lovely compliment to Iolanthe that is, Lindariel !!

I have a teaser poster for the Fellowship of the Ring film (sorry about the f-word!) hanging in my living room. It's of the Gates of Argonath ("The Legend comes to life") - I chose it specifically because it was an illustration rather than a photograph of the cast. I think that still counts as art, doesn't it?

I think that poster is great Tolkien art! I have also wondered if I shouldn't try to get the Argonath bookends that were available a while ago.

I have a little framed copy of Tolkien's Rivendell in my hallway, as well as a newly framed larger version of his painting of Bilbo and the dwarves escaping on/in barrels. This was made into a poster in 1987 when the Bodleian Library had a showing of his art from 'The Hobbit' in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its publication. I bought the poster at the Bodleian giftshop this summer, a great souvenir! (The Bodleian giftshop is a fantastic place--I could have spent a month's salary there!)

Merry, I love Tolkien's drawings - I have a 2006 Tolkien diary which includes a lot of them. I might frame some of the pages from the diary and put them on the wall!! Thanks for the tip about the Bodleian giftshop - Oxford is only a couple of hours from my home - I think a trip might be on the cards!

Good idea about framing the pictures from the diary. I could do that with some of the Tolkien calendar ones now that the last page is about to be turned. I have enjoyed that calendar from the poetry competition so much this year and I think it counts as Tolkien art on my wall :D .

My Tolkien calendar has Smaug on for December. Do you have the same one? I haven't seen one for 2007. :cry:

Next summer, for two and a half months, during the summer of 2007. There will be exhibitions, concerts, all manner of things from and with John Hove

L'Univers fantastique de John Howe habitera la cité médiévale pendant deux mois et demi cet été.

I gave my daughter the Alan Lee calendar for Christmas (didn't see John Howe's or I might have gotten that one for myself :wink:). I'll be snagging it at year-end. :lol:
