That quote comes just after what I always think is the most heart-breaking line in the whole story. It always gets me a bit teary when I think about it. Staying the hands of the hobbits who want to kill Saruman, Frodo says: "He was great once..." The ineffable sadness of squandered potential. And that Frodo was, even then, with all that Saruman had done, prepared to give him the chance of finding reformation, is for me one of his finest moments - eclipsed only by his offer to take the Ring to Mordor at the Council of Elrond.
Anyway, enough of my waffle! If I have understood the rules of this game aright, it now falls to me to nominate a quotation for identification. (Apologies if I've misunderstood.)
This is, I think, quite an easy one, but I do love it so!
