Our latest Artist in Profile is Roger Garland who gives us a vision of Middle-earth quite unlike our previous two artists, Ted Nasmith and Anke Eissmann. I looked in vain for a portrait of Roger so we have my favourite painting of The Two Trees of Valinor instead and I hope it will entice you to come and learn a bit more about him in our new Roger Garland Thread where I would love to hear your impressions of his paintings.

We have been moving a few things around here at MeJ and created a whole new section called Inspired Journeys. This is the new home for all art inspired by Tolkien. Our Artists in Profile series now lives there along with general art discussion and Tolkien's own art.
We also have an new forum to play in: Member's Art and Poetry. If you have ever been inspired by Tolkien to write a poem or paint your own vision of Middle-earth and its peoples this is the place share them. Our Yule Season Contest showed what a talented members we have here and my hope is that by giving our efforts a proper home and chatting about our work we will be inspired to carry on being creative and stretch ourselves.
One thing I’ve realised while researching and writing the Artists in Profile series is the fact that there are as many visions of Middle-earth as there are artists and everyone has something unique to offer. Even if you have never done anything like this before why not get out your paintbrush and your pen and give it a go?
One thing to note - this is a forum for painting and poetry, but no fan fiction please. Let's celebrate the Professor but not run away with him .

Merry and I have just returned from this, the first Tolkien Conference in Oxford which took place in the college where Tolkien spent his days as an undergraduate. We'll be posting reports and comments on the new Oxford Tolkien Conference thread.
As you will see from the list of Speakers and Papers on the thread, we had some wonderful speakers who shared some fascinating and challenging ideas. I feel that those of us that were lucky enough to attend will be thinking and talking about this conference for a very long time to come.

A Thesis by Per Håkan Arvidsson
Back in June of 2006, we posted the first part of a two part thesis written by Per Håkan Arvidsson, and published by the Tolkien Society entitled "Aragorn: Tales of the Heir of Isildur. Part 1 - The Evolution of the Man".
We are delighted that Per Håkan Arvidsson has found us here at Middle-earth Journeys and joined our membership here. We are hoping that his busy schedule allows time for him to post his thoughts on our comments on our June feature.
However...we are absolutely thrilled to present Per Håkan Arvidsson's earlier thesis work in its entirety, published here at Middle-earth Journeys with his permission, entitled The Ring.

We were so impressed with the quality of essays submitted to the Christmas Essay Contest that we have opened a new forum under Tolkien Studies devoted entirely to members’ original work:
If you have long been thinking about a favourite Middle-earth subject now is the time to pull those scattered ideas and notes together, give them a bit of a polish and share! Get some feedback on those ideas and let’s see what new regions we can travel to together. Occasionally we might suggest a theme to give us a group focus.
If you can reference sources then great – but don’t be put off if you can’t, we just want to get you writing, thinking and having some fun expanding your ideas beyond the confines of the usual post.
You will be able to start a new thread yourselves for each essay in this forum. This will give us space to discuss them and it will mean we can all easily find our work again in the future, so please use the title of your essay as your thread heading.
So....let's get writing .
