Iolanthe, your Glaurung is wonderful and I think you should take him along to the Oxonmoot next year. Why not stir 'em up a bit!

I think I prefer your 'Spirit of the Trees' the other way up, the blue half looks like a reflection in water if you turn the picture upside down - even though it's not a true mirror image. A sort of trompe l'oeil to get the observer thinking!!!

You can't beat wet-in-wet washes to create that 'glowing' feeling.

It is a bit like a reflection, but when you turn it that way round the grass (if it is grass, I'm not sure...) is then in the sky

. The picture is also quite interesting sideways

Hi! Back from holiday vacation, and what goodies await me! Marvelous, marvelous work ladies, I am SO jealous of your talent! I can only manage stick figures.

Iolanthe, the trees are just beautiful and so dreamlike. And Glaurung is magnificently scary! WOW!

EV, your dragon is terrific, and I too would love to see the full piece if you can get it scanned.

Riv, the Green Hill Country looks so inviting. I can practically feel the grass under my feet and smell the scones baking in the kitchen of the little hobbit home.

I really like the new version Riv

. The border with the two tall trees and the celtic knot design works really well, inviting you into the picture. And the trees in the picture are much more like an English landscape now. I love the hobbit holes with the smoke curling out of the chimneys and the fact that the painting makes you want to walk through it and see what's over the hills. Bravo

That's just what I was aiming for

- a sort of memory of the Trees now lost, lingering with the Sun and Moon.

Thanks for the input. I am trying to work towards a Tolkien series incorporating the celtic knots. This is what I believe I have settled on for Green Hill Country.

Riv, I like your latest version of "The Green Hill Country" very much - the trees within the painting are defnitely more English now. I love the idea of the trees on the border overlapping into the picture itself - and the most recent Celtic knotwork along the bottom is wonderful! particularly the subtle changes of colour behind the fancy stuff in front.

I've been making good use of my Christmas break and done some more 'chuck some paint on a page and see what it looks like' dabbling. I was going to throw this painting away after doing the initial washes but marbretherese told me not to and to give it another go. So - after much fiddling and rather a lot of white gouache to make up for it's shortcomings:

Fingolfin crossing the Helcaraxë

It's more of a watercolour and gouache sketch than a finished painting. I might go back to it again and re-do it now I know what it's supposed to look like

Small - only 11 1/2" x 9". I'm trying to stick to paper that will fit under my scanner, and even so there is a strip of darker blue sky missing at the top that balances it better.

Because it's small you can see the texture of the rough 300 g/m paper I've used. It's a pretty tough paper that you can scrub away at and this one got well scrubbed

ooo, this is wonderful Iolanthe! I love snow and blue and white - so this painting pretty much has it all for me!
