To the Professor! in gratitude for one of life's enduring joys.
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

"He may become like a glass filled with a clear light for eyes to see that can."

Thank you, dear Professor Tolkien for lifting the glass up to our eyes and sharing with us this extraordinary world.

I don't think the Professor would mind sharing his birthday thread with Frodo and Bilbo. Happy Birthday, dear hobbits!

A grand idea, Merry!

Happy birthday, dearest Bilbo and Frodo! May you have a party at which it "snows food and rains drink." Just don't set the Party Tree on fire with all those candles!

Let's bring in a huge lot of cake, then. ;)

It's that time of year again! Let's remember that January 3 is the Professor's birthday, and Tolkien fans around the world take the time to toast him appropriately. To the Professor!

We always try to have a mushroom-y delicacy with our ale.

This year, I'd like to toast The Professor with Eru's words, which brought Arda into Being (they also happen to be my signature line!):

Therefore I say: Eä! Let these things Be! And I will send forth into the Void the Flame Imperishable, and it shall be at the heart of the World, and the World shall Be.

To you, dear Professor Tolkien, the true Flame Imperishable at the heart of Middle-earth. :flower:

This year I am toasting the Professor in tea, and saying:

Here's to you, Professor Tolkien: thank you! thank you! thank you!
"Torment in the dark was the danger that I feared, and it did not hold me back.
But I would not have come, had I known the danger of light and joy."

Tea for me also - although a good ale might be more appropriate if I had one, or a really good Guinness for a man that loved Ireland!

Happy Birthday, dear Professor

You have enriched our world in all the ways you hoped and in other ways you never imagined.
The road goes ever on and on indeed!!!!

It's 2010 and a good time to remind ourselves that tomorrow, January 3, is our beloved Professor's birthday! The protocol set by the Tolkien Society is that at 9:00 PM local time, we are to stand, raise a glass of our favorite beverage and say "The Professor". Reports of the details are to be made here.
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

How lovely! I'm already picturing the long, slow wave of hourly toasts gradually progressing around the globe tomorrow. Meliel and I will be adding ours, probably with her favorite beverage -- root beer!

I shall definitely be toasting him in exactly one hour's time :D . I think a nip of Bailey's will do the trick!

Happy Birthday, Professor. We'd be all the poorer without you.
