Merry, that's possibly because, on re-reading what I wrote, I got it wrong...

I think you're talking about Cirith Ungol. Poor Sam runs into a kind of force field, I guess, and can't get through, but then pulls out Galadriel's phial, which opens the way, but causes a lot of noise to be made, as well.

"'That's done it!' said Sam. 'Now I've rung the front-door bell! Well, come on somebody!' he cried. 'Tell Captain Shagrat that the great Elf-warrior has called, with his elf-sword too!'"
