Hello? (as the echo bounces around the empty room)

Has everyone left or would you like a clue?
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Partially correct, Philipa--it is Gandalf. Radagast is kind of mossy, but it is not he of whom Gandalf speaks.
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Merry, It's Gandalf talking to the hobbits about Tom Bombadil on the way back to the Shire.

Since I'm on holiday from tomorrow I'm going to set a question without waiting for a reply - if you know the answer please go ahead and set the next quote - don't wait for me to come back!
Here then at last comes the ending of the Fellowship of the Ring
I hope it's an easy one!

Wow, Gil--that's the clearest hint I've ever seen!

It seems we have sadly neglected our trivia threads recently--sorry about that. The good news, I hope, is that we have all been doing terrificly interesting things somewhere else!

Level 1

Who sang?
Beyond the gate the seaward road runs south,
But you came not with the wailing gulls from the grey sea's mouth.

Legolas sang these lovely lines as part of his tribute to Boromir, as the Three Hunters consigned the body of the Steward of Gondor's Heir to the Falls of Rauros.

Here is my Level 1 question:

In PJ's movie rendition of FOTR, Sam Gamgee states on two separate occasions, "Don't you leave/lose him, Samwise Gamgee. And I don't mean to." In the film, Sam indicates that it is Gandalf that gave him this important charge, but that is NOT the case in The Professor's wonderful story.

Who actually charges Sam with this important task -- "Don't you leave him!" -- in Tolkien's tale?

Lindariel, I am guessing, but something gnaws at my memory that it is Gildor Inglorion and the Elves in the woods above Woodhall who gave this advice to Sam.

You are correct, Riv! Tolkien doesn't specify Gildor Inglorion in particular, but it was indeed the Elves of Gildor's Wandering Company who urge Sam to stay by Frodo's side. Here's the citation from "A Short Cut to Mushrooms:"
"If you don't come back, sir, then I shan't, that's certain," said Sam. "Don't you leave him! they said to me. Leave him! I said. I never mean to. I am going with him, if he climbs to the Moon; and if any of those Black Riders try to stop him, they'll have Sam Gamgee to reckon with, I said. They laughed."

"Who are they, and what are you talking about?"

"The Elves, sir. We had some talk last night; and they seemed to know you were going away, so I didn't see the use of denying it. Wonderful folk, Elves, sir! Wonderful!"
Your turn!
