Right you are Merry! "He came alone and in bear's shape" "then Beorn stooped & lifted Thorin - & bore him out of the fray" You are up!

That makes a great picture, doesn't it?

This question might be a little harder, level 2, I guess: What does Tolkien tell us is the etymology of the word cram?
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Merry, somewhere I seem to remember that Tolkien took it from the Elvish 'krab', meaning 'press'...I think.

Yes--great memory, RR! The cakes are made by compressing the ingredients.

Your turn!
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

A good (educated) guess Merry!

Level two here...

What is the longest possible estimated time (in days) that it took Gandalf, Dwarves, and Hobbit to travel from Bag End to Rivendell?

It seems that I remember it being said that it would take "a few days."

That's very non-specific, but is it what you had in mind, Riv?

No c_h, I believe that there is a specific amount of days (and more than a few).

Hint: you can only get at it by calculating backwards. :D

Well, shoot, I still can't figure the answer to your question, Riv!

Does anyone else know the answer to this one?

I figured out a couple of really good trivia questions last night, but I'm stumped on this one!!!

If you calculate backward c_h, you come up with the possibility that they were on the road for at least 51 days.

Since you have thought of a couple more questions...would you like to take a crack at the next one? :D

Wow, you're quick!

Just for my own curiosity, could you direct me toward where you find that in the book? I must not have been paying attention to details when I read that part!

And, sure, I'd love to have the next question!

I was thinking of the LOTR films last night and came up with a few questions about things various characters are seen (or not seen) doing during the course of the three films.

So, my first question is probably a level 2 but in terms of familiarity with the film versions.

In all three films, please name five scenes in which written material (any form of writing) is shown (not just people holding books). And for those elusive bonus points, if a character is reading the text, please tell us who it is.

One hint is that there are more than five scenes.

Happy New Year everyone!

Actually I found it in Karen Wynn Fonstad's The Atlas of Middle-earth (a terrific resource). It is in the chapter on The Hobbit.

Awesome! That's one I don't have. I'll have to put that on my wish list for the new year!

Thanks, Riv!

Darlin' I hate to break it to you but these games and forum is pretty much dominated by the written work of Tolkien. Although we've thought about the movies as a side line the discussions are only from material of the books. Only exception as of late is in the Hobbit forum for the impending movie (we're all dying to see).

Could you throw us another bone. (:-o<

No problem! I can certainly understand the distinction!

Let me see what else I can come up with!
