Just dropping by to say I love John Howe.

Then you're in good company, Kirill! We have a lot of John Howe fans here and some of us have had the privilege of meeting him - he's a lovely man. There are lot's of interesting links, reports and snippets about him if you look back through this thread  .

HI Calendar

Post by Parmastahir »

We are working to complete the 2009 Heren Istarion calendar. We have the works of two new illustrators this year, and Jef Murray has generously done the cover for us again. You will soon find it and ordering information on the http://www.herenistarion.org/ (Northeast Tolkien Society) website. All proceeds benefit HI. The 2008 issue was so successful, that membership in HI is now free of charge.

2009 Heren Istarion/Northeast Tolkien Society Calendar!

Post by Parmastahir »

If interested, you can check out the 2009 Heren Istarion/Northeast Tolkien Society calendar at:

http://herenistarion.org

You can find a link to the calendar and ordering info in Main Menu (fourth item in the left-hand column.) Jef Murray has provided cover artwork and sketches. We have two new illustrators this year: Catherine (Kasiopea) Chmiel and Colin (Bungo) Williams. Kasiopea is a well-known illustrator from Poland. Bungo is an amateur (in name only!) from Australia.

I was so proud of the 2008 calendar that I was worried that the 2009 could not possibly live up to it . . . this in spite of the fact that I had lined up Kasia and Bungo as the illustrators (and love both of their works.) I need not have worried. I got a proof of it from my daughter last week and it looks GREAT! I am REALLY happy with it!!

Proceeds benefit HI/NETS. Last year's calendar was so popular that membership in HI/NETS is now free.

It looks great, Parmastahir. Good luck with the project. I particularly enjoyed reading Bungo's little autobiography--'Was introduced to Tolkien at age 26. Furious to have lived so long ignorant.' This made me want to find my classmate who introduced me to Tolkien at age 10 and thank her!
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Humor

Post by Parmastahir »

Hi Merry -

Mr. Williams has an excellent sense of humor (or humour, as he's Australian!) Even though he's an "amateur" illustrator, I love his calendars. They are extremely well done (being essentially hand-made in very limited quantities.)

2009 Heren Istarion Calendar

Post by Parmastahir »

My daughter and I printed the 2009 Heren Istarion / Northeast Tolkien Society calendar last evening. I will be getting the order list from Jessie & Anthony and posting very soon and posting them next week. So those that have ordered should see their calendars well before Christmas and the New Year.

I think it a wonderful creation (but I am biased in this matter!) Please consider ordering one (at http://herenistarion.org ) for your use during the year (or collection of Tolkienalia.) This may be your only chance to see some of Colin William's illustrations. He is an amateur (in name only!) and his work is not well-known.

Thank you!

John Howe's new book "Forging Dragons" can be viewed at artistsnetworkshop.com-
In this amazing collection of dragon art created over his 30-year career, iconic fantasy artist John Howe explores the inspirations and techniques he uses to render these amazing beasts of myth and legend. Each dragon is gloriously presented on a double page spread followed by John's working sketches, explorations of his creation process, and the mythology behind each dragon. From fire dragons erupting from molten depths, to sea dragons churning stormy waters, every medieval, celtic, gothic and sci-fi icon is represented in this celebration of these legendary beasts by a true master. Features a selection of John's reknowned Tolkien dragons including Smaug, Glaurung and the Fell Beasts.

I've got this book on order from Amazon - I can't wait for it to arrive. I've always been a sucker for dragons and a John Howe dragon is the best :D .

Dragon Illustration

Post by Parmastahir »

Then at the risk of shameless promotion (albeit of a good cause ;-) ), you should order a copy of the Heren Istarion calendar! The Foreyule (December) illustration by Colin Williams is his rendering of Smaug. His are all pen and ink renderings and the detail in them is amazing. I have wondered how he can do such 12 illustrations per year for his annual calendar.
