Meliel, somehow I don't think that sounds like Gandalf. It sounds like it is from the end of the book, and I think it just has the ring of Elrond to it...but...I have been known to be VERY wrong before.

Riv, it is Elrond. On the departure of Gandalf and the hobbits from Rivendell towards home. However, I can understand why Meliel thought it may have been Gandalf.

Is that old Barliman Butterbur at the Prancing Pony, talking with the Hobbits and Strider?

Was this said in Hobbiton at the end of the book?

Then I would say Minas Tirith, but can't remember who said it.

I had a suspicion that this sounded like Ioreth, the "wise-woman of Gondor," according to Gandalf, and poking my head into the chapter "The Houses of Healing" proved me right! She's lamenting the many reasons why the stock of healing herbs in The Houses of Healing isn't what it ought to be.

Well, you've wasted a year, so why wait longer?

Is this Rosie Cotton to Sam, after his wasted year saving Middle-earth?
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Yup, Merry, it sure is! I just love sweet, down-to-earth Rosie! Especially, "Hullo, Sam! . . . Where've you been? They said you were dead; but I've been expecting you since the Spring. You haven't hurried, have you? . . . . Well, be off with you! . . . If you've been looking after Mr. Frodo all this while, what d'you want to leave him for, as soon as things look dangerous?" This was too much for Sam. It needed a week's answer, or none. . . . "I think you look fine, Sam . . . Go on now! But take care of yourself, and come straight back as soon as you have settled the ruffians!"

She's a hoot!

Your turn!

I love these lines, too, Lindariel, and I've used "it needed a week's answer or none" to describe other contexts. I also like the Gaffer's reaction to Sam's return: What happened to his weskit?

Who said, "Much have I desired to see you, mightiest king of western lands, and especially in these latter years, to save you from the unwise and evil counsels that beset you!"?
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Oh!! That would be the soft voice of Saruman speaking to Theoden.

Is this all you have returned to say? Or can it be that you have withdrawn because you are overmatched?
