Philipa, initially it was The Lord of the Eagles and "two of his guards" who first investigated the ruckus in the woods. After their initial reconnaissance, The Lord of the Eagles then "summoned many other eagles to him." There would have been at least 14 Eagles involved in the rescue (Gandalf plus 13 dwarves), since Bilbo escaped by grabbing onto Dori's ankles rather than having an Eagle all to himself. However, there could have been many other Eagles involved in fighting off the wargs and goblins while the rescue was taking place, and Tolkien does not stipulate an exact number involved in the fighting and rescue. Later, a total of 16 eagles -- the Lord of the Eagles and "his fifteen chieftains" -- delivered Gandalf, the dwarves, and Bilbo to The Carrock.

The answer I was looking for was two. Perhaps I didn't make the question clear enough.

It's your turn L. :D

Here's my Level 1 question:

What were the terms of Bilbo's "contract" with the Dwarves as their professional burglar?

OK here's a hint. Thorin left the terms in letter form on the mantelpiece in Bag End.

Oops--lots of activity in the forum this week, Lindariel. Sorry to have overlooked this.

I remember that Bilbo was to get 1/14th share in the loot and I think the dwarves would see to his burial expenses, should it come to that.

I wonder what expenses they had while travelling? 8)

Here's an easy one for those of us who have been reading Unfinished Tales: Who was Tuor's mother?

In the same vein.

How many years since the Nirnaeth when Tuor picked up his harp and lemented he had not found The Hidden City.

That would be three and twenty years.
