This is a terrific entry, marbretherese, and it will be further enlightened when we get to "The Quest for Erebor" section of Unfinished Tales. I've always loved The Hobbit, but this calendar exercise has certainly caused me to have an even greater appreciation for the subtleties Tolkien ingeniously worked into his "children's" tale.

I like the summation of what we have learned, marbretherese. Maybe you could add an invitation for our members to add other things they have learned through our exploration. Or maybe I just don't want this little project to end so soon!
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

That's a great idea Merry! I've focussed on the passages I had to write about and the things we've learnt from those - but I'm sure there are more! how would we go about it? ask for posts in this thread and then incorporate them into the entry?
"Torment in the dark was the danger that I feared, and it did not hold me back.
But I would not have come, had I known the danger of light and joy."

I think this thread is limited just to those of us who are part of The Hobbit Calendar writing team. Perhaps we should encourage folks to comment in The Hobbit thread, since that is already open to everyone? Maybe once the final Hobbit Calendar entry has been posted, Riv could put a banner to that effect in The Hobbit thread, inviting all members to comment on what our adventure through the Hobbit Calendar has taught us?

Or perhaps once the Hobbit Calendar has been completed, Riv could open this thread up to the full membership? We've had so many wonderful conversations already in this thread about the things we've learned as we prepared the Calendar entries. Maybe we could share them by opening the thread and inviting further comment from the rest of the membership?

Riv, what do you think would be best?

I would use the current Hobbit thread. You'd want to keep the discussions in one place for reference and not a separate thread which may be archived in time.

So where are we on the calendar these days? It's spring: is Bilbo still at Beorn's?
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Yup - until May 1st! Makes you wonder how they filled the days....
Now let the song begin! Let us sing together
Of sun, stars, moon and mist, rain and cloudy weather...
