Level 1
"Those were ***! And nasty suspicious-looking creatures at that, and rude as well. You must have heard the ugly names they were calling after us. But the *** were different. There used to be great friendship between them and the people of Thror; and they often brought us secret news, and were rewarded with such bright things as they coveted to hide in their dwellings."
What creatures was Balin talking about?

There used to be great friendship between them and the people of Thror; and they often brought us secret news, and were rewarded with such bright things as they coveted to hide in their dwellings."

Level Two....
What was the name in Elvish given to the Elves who refused to join the westward march from Cuivienen...and translated into the Common Speech what does it mean...

The elves that refused the journey were known as the Avari, which means The Unwilling.
It is to be noted that the Elves were being asked to leave Middle Earth, where they had lived since they had awokenm and follow the Valar back to Valinor. Most of the elves did not trust the Valar because they had met Melkor first and this had not been a good experience.
So, even though a few ambasadors went first to Valinor and came back with glowing reports there were many who refused.

Oh elizabeth!! One of my all time favorite Tolkien names. Iarwain Ben-adar was the name given to Tom Bombadil by the Grey-elves, I believe it is Sandarin in origin and means "Old Fatherless".

Very close. In fact close enough for our purposes. According to Tyler it means OLDEST Fatherless... your go Riv.

OK...Level 4?
It is said that the foundation for Tolkien's mythology and especially for
The Lord of the Rings is
The Saga of the Volsungs or
Volsunga Saga. It tells the story of Sigurd, the Dragonslayer.

What was the name of Sigurd's reforged sword and who reforged it for him, and what was he to Sigurd?

Great question RR....
The name of Sigurd's sword was...Gram...it was forged by Regin who was Sigurd's foster father and tutor in Hjalprek's court in Denmark...
