Correct in that Morgoth began the campaign when he marched against the western army of the Union commanded by Fingon.
However, the battle actually started when Gwindor, enraged by the mutilation and murder of his brother, broke ranks with Fingon's alignment at Eithel Sirion and, followed by the main part of the western army, drove Morgoth back to the Gate of Angband in just three days.
