Very, very nice Philipa! You really conveyed the various elements of the story -- the dragon, the arrow, the thrush, and the moon. Brava!

Don't feel funny about that, Philipa--had you not posted it here, I would not have seen it! And I enjoyed it, too. I love the use of negative space--well done!--and somehow it seems an appropriate medium for the content. The Annotated Hobbit has a lot of illustrations from many of the translations of The Hobbit that appeared worldwide and most of them are in black and white, so in some ways, that's how the scenes in the book appear in my mind!

that's a good point, Merry - Philipa's artwork does remind me of the illustrations from some of the early East European or Scandinavian editions, for example.

I had thought the piece was primitive looking or simple in design. That is why I like wood blocks. Tolkien's troll drawing was another thought too. I wanted to do this scene but have to be careful not to duplicate Tolkien's drawing. 
I'm thinking of another scene from The Hobbit but will explore the design before revealing it to you. It may be a few days though... I'm having fun.

Can't wait to see it, Philipa. Keeping it minimalist by using blocks means that you are really free to interpret in a unique way.

Wow - you have been busy! I've been following it all on the blog too . I really like both, but I think Goblin Gate is my favourite because of all the subtle play of the different green-grey shades.

Lonely Mountain really shows off the fiery heart of the mountain. And the colours of Goblin Gate are lovely. I think I prefer it of the two.

I like both of them very much, but I think my favorite is The Lonely Mountain, with the abstraction of Smaug at its core. Just fantastic! This is an incredible series, Riv. I hope it turns into a calendar!!!!

I enjoyed reading about these on your blog, RR, and I think you got Beorn's Hall just right. I am also enjoying the shape of the trees in the Shire!
I have to say, though, that there is something about the Goblin's Gate that is not feeling right to me. I've just stared at it for a long time, trying to figure out what it is. I'm not very good at this, but I think that it has something to do with the colors. Your pieces are very dependent on colors, since the kinds of shapes you use in each piece are kind of similar. So the colors set the mood. And the ones you use in Goblin's Gate are some of my favorite colors and just too pretty! Maybe this is a case of the colors not reproducing correctly when you copy them here, but it seems to me that the greens need to be sicker, slimier to evoke that orcish feeling. Does that make any sense?
