I just read some speculation at TOR.n that Tom Cruise might play Bilbo. :x They said that he has flown to NZ to meet with PJ.

Oh so true Riv!!!

It's back to the problem again of previous readers of the Hobbit just like LOTR having a mental picture themselves of what Bilbo should be like.......a hard decsion to make and a hard one for any actor to live up to in my opinion but I cant wait to know though :)

In my humble opinion, at the very least, the actor who plays Bilbo should be able to do a British accent. (And if there is one thing I would criticize Viggo for, it is that he was not very good at this. I know, he arrived late, but still, I'm just saying . . . ) I haven't seen Mr. Cruise in many movies, but I've read that he hasn't been able to master accents. I'd rather see Meryl Streep play Bilbo!

I wonder when we'll start seeing 'things' come out of the DT/Jackson camp. 8)

It's been quiet hasn't it? I think everything will be very closely guarded for a while yet, then after they announce the cast there will be 'leaked' tidbits for us to enjoy because PJ and Del Toro really know how to build up internet interest!

TOR.n has declared that a big announcement is going to be made on December 8. Let the fun begin!

That must be who's playing Bilbo (finally!). My bet is still on Martin Freeman  .

I want Martin Freeman as well, Iolanthe, but I have a feeling it's going to be James McAvoy.

I can live with that, he has such a sensitive face, although he isn't quite as 'Hobbity' as Freeman and looks a bit too young. But he could certainly hold an audience through two films and bring enough depth to Bilbo's journey!

My only problem with McAvoy is that he looks much more like Elijah Wood's Frodo than Sir Ian Holm's Bilbo. Martin Freeman is PERFECT casting to be a young Ian Holm, and hence, the younger Bilbo.l

Perhaps it is a live interview with dT as they did with PJ so long ago. Let the speculation begin!

That's a good point - I keep forgetting that there has to be some physical continuity to the younger Ian Holm Bilbo. Here's some idea of how he looked as a younger man

One Ring Net Scrapbook

How about John Simm (who is the new 'Master' in Doctor Who). He's a bit Hobbity and a well regarded actor. But he doesn't really look like Ian Holm  !

Another good choice!
A another candidate for a dwarf?

November 24th, 2009 by MrCere

StephenfryStephen Fry’s name has long been bandied about by fans as a possible and worthy choice to play a Dwarf in the upcoming two-movie film project “The Hobbit.” Today, spy “Dave” sent in a bit from the Twitterverse that leads us to think Jackson’s team and the project’s director Guillermo del Toro may be thinking the say way.

Fry says on his own Twitter account, “Seen Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh who are well & cheerful but jetlagged. My address . . . is in 20 mins. Then the film…”. Fry is doing some charity work with the premiere of Jackson’s The Lovely Bones and said in an earlier Twee that he needed to write a speechlet for the event. Clearly the two camps have spoken and for what it is worth, Fry would be a casting home run is the type of actor Jackson is known to choose for his films.

Add his name to Brian Cox’s as juicy casting rumors that make sense!

I'd love to see Steven Fry in it - though he's now lost so much weight his face has thinned down from the roundish look I imagine dwarves having.
