Hello all. Im an avid reader, but funnily enough a new Tolkien fan.
Im a young lady from South Africa (I consider 28 to be young) and have been facinated in all things mythological since I first found out where my name came from. My real name is Guinevere, the wife of Arthur and lover of Lancelot, who grew up in Lyanness, yet I have always been disappointed to possess such a name due to her actions.
I was introduced to Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson's films, recognised the link to Scandinavian mythology and was instantly hooked. I saw myself in Frodo in FoTR as I grew up at the "end" of the apartheid days (I say "end" as I still see it brewing in people's hearts and through their actions to this present day) and my parents tried to shelter me as well as they could from the cruel world out there as Gandalf tried to shelter Frodo. But I had to experience the cruelty of the world for myself, as Frodo had to, and am still shocked at how evil the world really is.
I actually lead 2 lives: Hard working and dedicated Registered Nurse at a Medical Emergency department of a government hospital by day, and Tolkien fan by night. As could be expected, I felt quite alone as absolutely no one around me could engage in intellegent conversations regarding the topics that I read (everyone my age, if they read, read Mills and Boons - not exactly intellectually challenging).
After surfing the internet, I came across this site and found the material quite intellectually stimulating!! Finally I can converse with people who are passionate about the same things as I am - Literature. Hope to engage in many debates and learn many new things in the vast sea of knowledge that you all possess.

lovely to have you join in, I too am a nurse. I work as a District Nurse for the good old NHS in England so like you i work very hard but also have little literary company with my fellow workers except one for whom we swap questions on Tolkien's work when we get time.

I've just discovered these forums. I have been reading LotR since 1971. Other than the books, I love the works of the many illustrators "out there" and their interpretations of the many scenes from LotR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion. Hi Merry -
The Green Hill Country is in reality The Green Mountains of Vermont. I use it because of my residence and because it has a decidedly Tolkien ring to it (no pun intended!)
My closing came about because a supporter (Hildifons Took, aka Sumner Hunnewell who catalogued the Marquette University Tolkien collection) was closing his emails with "Away from Tuckborough", and I loved it.
His closing came about because he used to live in Maine. While there, he used to close his letters with "In Tuckborough". When he moved away from Maine, he started using "Away from Tuckborough".
Now the reason that he used "In Tuckborough" was because he belonged to the original Tolkien Fellowship that the late Bernie Zuber founded. And Bernie would always close his letters with "In Fellowship".
So ultimately, my closing is part of a great tale (much like the discussion that Sam and Frodo had about the Phial of Galadriel and its light coming from the Star of Earendil and ultimately from the Silmarils).
