There are no conventions, Gil: give a hint when you're tired of waiting on us!
I'll hazard a guess: Boromir?

sorry Merry, not Boromir.
It is Lotr.
The speaker comes from a rural food-loving society. He is addressing a group of people, having survived a battle that he feared would never be fought.

'a battle he feared would never be fought' you say? Hobbit for sure but which one feared a battle wouldn't be fought? Quite a puzzler.

Wait a minute, was it not Merry who was asked by Theoden to stay behind before riding to Gondor and Minas Tirith?

Yes he was Philippa, but that is not the incident I have in mind, sorry!!!
Battle, unexpected (certainly to those being attacked) involving both M and P????? The attackers had been dismissed as harmless by their enemy. Really well done in the films although this quote is not in the film.
I think this is becoming a level 3 question.

That wasn't my intention but the quote IS a bit obscure! It came as a surprise to me when I was looking for something, and I thought I knew LOTR backwards.

Maybe not a level 3 question, Gil, but some of us try to rely on our rather ancient and decrepit memories on these questions rather than just picking up the book and looking it up! This keeps us humble.
The attack on Isengard?

oh for heaven's sake. I've been re-reading The Two Towers of late and I just stumbled on the answer to your quiz question.
Merry was recounting what Treebeard had asked of him and Pippen to collect 'man foods' for Theoden, Gandalf and guests after the down fall of Isengard. Collecting the food was the 'labours' and the 'reward' was the success of finding pipeweed in floating barrels.
