Makes perfect sense, Lindariel. It's true, one does not think of Elrond or Galadriel as 'earthy'. I must confess, though, that I wasn't thinking of much past the crown of leaves and flowers! How the moviemakers portray his throne room will also be interesting.

I'd been waiting eagerly for Thorin and I'm not disappointed! I have to say that he looks a bit dark but, after thinking about it for a bit, I think this is appropriate--his desire for revenge, which drives nearly the whole episode, could become apparent visually.
It'll be interesting to see if all this gear is what the dwarves find in the weapons hoard toward the end of the story. If that lot showed up looking as pictured on Bilbo's door at the beginning, that would be frightening indeed!

Well, Merry, remember that they showed up at Bilbo's door for "tea" and a meeting that strayed on into dinner, and that they met up later at an inn to begin their journey. I suspect the dwarves probably stashed the vast majority of their traveling gear at the inn and only brought their maps and musical instruments to Bilbo's unexpected party. Wouldn't it be interesting if they show up at Bilbo's house in their "Sunday best" for the meeting with the burglar? Then imagine Bilbo's reaction when he shows up at the inn to find these fierce warrior dwarves waiting for him! That would be fun!

In watching PJ's new video today, I think I did see the dwarves dressed in more colorful, less marshall clothes. The actors looked like they were having a lot of fun! And I'm so glad there will be singing!
I've read some of the criticism that they look too much like Klingons and I guess I have to say that it has some merit. But at this point, these are just snapshots and perhaps we'll get a better feel for how they come to life in December, 2012!

Hi sorry have'nt posted in ages but I have been visiting and reading
The speculation and discussions just wets my appetite more and more about how the book is going to be portrayed but it is the parts such as the white council or other less detailed history which could be included that intrigue me more as they have limited background for PJ to work from. We have much to look forward to I believe

Hi, hope--glad to know you've been around! It's all very exciting, isn't it? Seeing Galadriel again (in PJ's facebook video) made me wonder, too, how they will fit her in. I think I can accept changes to the texts as long as they are in the spirit of The Professor!

So did you see PJ's new FB vlog this week? It's mostly about the 3D technology, so I have to say I wasn't as excited about this one as I was about the last. I sure hope they don't get lost in this new technology and forget to tell the story well. But we do get glimpses of the characters in various situations. Armitage looks great!

Hi Merry! Watched the new vlog last night. Having watched several 3D movies over the past several months, I am cautiously optimistic about The Hobbit. At least it is being SHOT in 3D, which means at least the resulting movie will not give me a horrible headache. It's the 2D movies that are later turned into 3D movies that just make me miserable. I also hope that PJ & Co. don't get so caught up having their jollies with the new technology that they lose sight of the story, but I have a feeling we are in good hands. After all, they broke all kinds of new ground with movie-making technology during LOTR, and they still managed to do a really fantastic job with the three movies -- really exceeding all of my expectations in so many ways with the beautiful designs, storytelling, character arcs, etc. Of course, I have my quibbles, and I think PJ did go overboard with all the battle scenes to the detriment of some of the more moving scenes, especially in ROTK. But on the whole, LOTR was simply amazing, spectacular, overwhelming, etc. -- and I expect to be blown away by The Hobbit as well.
If I'm not, however, I will be HORRIBLY disappointed!
P.S. I also agree that Richard Armitage looks fabulous as Thorin -- really, really FIERCE, and almost Klingon-esque! I LIKE IT!

I've just read at TOR.n that the actors have been flying into the airport of a town named 'Dunedin'. Nice coincidence, don't you think?

I just read a bit of Ian McKellan's blog at TOR.n, and he reports that Hobbiton will be left intact as a tourist attraction after the movies are made, which we knew, I think. But he also reports that if we visit there, we'll be able to get a snack at the Green Dragon! Wouldn't that be great?
