Sad enough there where so many prints of the 1977 2nd impression that it is not worth a lot at all. It is a good example of a 1st edition which is not valuable, because of the amount that where printed. No less then 5 printing companies here printing The Silmarillion at that time! You see even then there was a hype...

The demand was so high that it was impossible for one printer to handle. So it was needed that there where many companies involved to get so many The Silmarillion's printed. After a lot of research we are now sure that the very first books where printed by Clowes and therefor these are the most valuable. Also because the very first print run of the first edition was particular smaller then the others. If you take 5 different 1977 The Silmarillion's you will see a different printer mentioned every time. Yet it is hard to find the Clowes one.
Secondly there where also a lot of book club editions made also at the same time. These are also first editions and most of the time where taken from the normal printing run and then bound by the book clubs. In total there are at least 9 variations possible. I might write an article about this one day!

Fascinating stuff about the first editions! Very different from the first printing of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien would have felt his long faith in the Sil fully vindictated wouldn't he?
Now let the song begin! Let us sing together
Of sun, stars, moon and mist, rain and cloudy weather...

Don't know where you found info about a signed edition, just wanted to tell everyone who will be in or near London April 19th, that Alan Lee will sign the book at Forbidden Planet (fantasy, sc-fi, comics bookstore etc) in Shaftesbury Avenue between 6 and 7 pm. Be nice to him.Beren wrote:I'm looking forward to this tale! It is my quest to find out all i can about this book. I have already pre-ordered the hardback, the deluxe edition and am now waiting for more info about the signed deluxe edition... I just neeeeed to have that one.
April will be very exciting!
Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising
he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
Hope he rekindled, and in hope ended;
over death, over dread, over doom lifted
out of loss, out of life, unto long glory.

Have been updating the Children of Hurin FAQ! After spending some hours at the library of congress backhand i managed to find the table of contents of the Children of Hurin. This is of course of a proof copy. For US copy right law they need to dump a copy there, so that is how i came to the idea to look there to find the contents! Also added the diary and calendar which will be Children of Hurin related in 2008, a summary of the tale of Children of Hurin and some more info on the different covers and editions... enjoy!
