Thanks to this discussion, I've had the same thought about visiting Sarehole. Iolanthe and I are probably less than 90 minutes drive away and it would make a nice Summer day out!! we ARE lucky, and sometimes we don't make use of our luck . . .

This is one of my favourite Tolkien letters. Reading somebody's letters is a great way to get to know something about them - I read Tolkien's before I read his autobiography, and would recommend them to anybody interested in finding out more about The Professor!

I love the letters, too. Although I know that they didn't publish the most personal of his letters, I think we still get a feeling for Tolkien the person through the letters that we don't get just through reading the books.

It was a work of love, Michka! Thanks for your kind remarks. It was a group project and a lot of fun, and I still learn new things by reading them. I see no reason why you shouldn't print them for your own enjoyment. I think I can speak for the group about this. Thanks!
By the way, I'm going to be printing the dates and events of The Hobbit in our announcement space starting very soon!

I confess to having skipped passages, too, Michka, on many readings. I have missed many of Frodo's and Sam's steps on the way to Mordor. I have occasionally skipped descriptions of landscapes and buildings. But that just gives us a good excuse to read the texts over and over again!

Michka, if you access the 'User Control Panel' near the top of the page, then push the 'Profile' tab, and then the 'Edit Signature' tab on the side, you should be able to design and type in the signature quote you want. I look forward to seeing what you do!
