I am looking forward to December! I was musing this morning about having another Hobbit dinner party sometime during the week of the opening.

That sounds delicious and I don't even know what's on the menu. lol
I wanted to share this I found today. It's a trailer for The Hobbit told by the school boys of the Tower House. It looks wonderful.

Thanks, Philipa! What an ambitious group of lads! I wonder if the whole thing will be available on the web some day.
On the dinner party, I have found that the menu from the dinner at the Prancing Pony is very possible. (I'm not a great cook!) I've got a pretty easy mushroom soup recipe that makes it even more hobbity. But maybe trying to do something from the long list of foods from 'Unexpected Party' would be more appropriate this time.

Just for kicks please let us know the menu. I think it's a grand idea.
As for the movie I agree the boys have taken on a large task. I'm not sure if there are plans to host the movie somewhere.

You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Viggo-Works is sort of our sister cite and they pay the rent for us here, so it was the least I could do. Plus it was just fun! I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

I just read (over at Viggo Works) a quote from Viggo saying something like he would have been happy to be in the Hobbit movies, but no one asked. That seemed a bit strange to me and I wonder if there might be some hard feelings in the PJ camp about some of the less than complimentary things Viggo has said about PJ's directing style and the quality of the LOTR movies. I know there would be some problems getting Viggo to look younger, etc., but they seemed to have dealt with the same problems with Ian M. and Orlando B. (and I know wizards and elves don't age at the same rate as humans, but they can't have them looking any older in the past!).

Merry, I think Viggo would definitely have been asked to participate if they had chosen to make the much-talked-about-but-never-realized "Bridge" movie. However, they are making The Hobbit, enhanced with stuff from the Appendices from the same time period as The Hobbit. During this period, Aragorn is only 10 years old. That pretty much leaves Viggo out of the picture. I confess that I really wish PJ & Co. would give us a brief, meaningful glimpse of a 10-year-old Estel and his mother Gilraen in Rivendell, but that's probably asking too much!
I'm thrilled that PJ & Co. found a way to work Sir Ian Holm and Elijah Wood into the movie, although I do think that this more or less gives away the ending of the movie. Obviously, Bilbo lives to a ripe old age and doesn't get killed on his adventure by orcs or wargs or trolls or Smaug. It will definitely make the confrontation with Smaug a bit anticlimactic, which is unfortunate.
I did have fond hopes that PJ might consider ending The Hobbit with a slightly different perspective on Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday party -- that of Gandalf quietly meeting Aragorn on the wooded hillside, pointing Frodo out to the Ranger, and asking him to keep an eye on Bilbo's heir. That would be one way of working a grown-up Aragorn cameo into the film!

Yes, that would have made a nice scene and there are some imaginative possibilities for others. I just think Viggo might have burned some bridges.

Hmmmm . . . possibly, although I have always interpreted Viggo's comments about the LOTR filming as being directed more at the idiocyncracies of such an unprecedentedly large production rather than any sort of swipe at PJ & Co. specifically. He's been very frank about his admiration for David Cronenberg's meticulous planning and extremely efficient film-making, but those are entirely different kinds of movies in terms of scope, so it's rather like comparing apples and oranges.
PJ has mentioned on a number of occasions the almost daily faxes he received from Viggo with supportive ideas, comments, research, etc., and has expressed his appreciation for the feeling that Viggo was with him during all those sleepless late nights of planning for the next day of filming. He has also talked about Viggo coming in and rescuing them by agreeing to take up the role of Aragorn after they had already started filming with another actor and about how extremely lucky they were to have him. During all the talk about the potential "Bridge" film, PJ mentioned that it would be a great opportunity to bring Viggo back as Aragorn and about how extremely popular Viggo was in the role.
Viggo did assume leadership in advocating for more pay for the LOTR actors, but that was in negotiations with New Line, not PJ & Co., and I never got the feeling that Peter resented that at all. Maybe I've missed reading about any more acrimonious comments Viggo might have made about his LOTR experience, but my feeling was that overall he found it to be an extraordinary experience, that he considers PJ to be a friend, and that he would gladly return to the film set to reprise his role as Aragorn.
Have I missed something?

I do remember reading a couple of comments from Viggo about how disorganized things were and one specifically about the acting in LOTR not being very good.

Huh . . . I do recall his comments about things being crazy and disorganized, but that he also balanced those comments by saying it was understandable since they were undertaking a project of unprecedented size and scope, while at the same time building the infrastructure needed for such a vast movie.
I didn't see the comment about the acting (HIS acting, or other people's acting?) not being good! That surprises me. I know he doesn't regard Aragorn as his finest role or his best acting work -- and honestly, the character is an archetype, so it isn't exactly the biggest acting challenge in the world. It was PHYSICALLY a very demanding role, but not psychologically so. My problems aren't with the acting, but with the SCRIPT in some places. There are spots where the dialogue gets a bit cheesy/obvious, and even the best actors would have a hard time turning mush into gold.
I have read comments where Viggo's talked about how he had intended for Aragorn's accent to develop and change and that he's caught himself making mistakes with the accent or that the editing process didn't capture the evolution he had intended.
