I finished this at the weekend. It hasn't turned out exactly as I'd expected, but still . . .
. . . hardly had Frodo touched the ground when with a deep rumble there rolled down a fall of stones and slithering snow . . . LOTR2:III

I think it is WONDERFUL marbretherese! I love the colors and subtle integration of the characters. If it didn't turn out as you intended then it was indeed a happy accident.

Yes, indeed, marbretherese! This represents, I think, a new level of artistic quality for you, one in which you're not fighting the medium, but letting it happen. It really captures the motion!

RR, you remind me of Tolkien's poetic line of--something like--in every wood in every spring a different shade of green. (I'm not sure I got that right, but it's one of my favorite lines!)

Lettiing it happen is exactly what I've tried to do here , Merry - I'm so glad you said that! I've let the paint spread pretty much where it wants to - cerulean blue top left and bottom right for sky and ice, and random blobs of burnt sienna along the diagonal. When it dried I looked at the result to find the members of the fellowship - Aragorn and Frodo first, and the pony's head & hind quarters - which told me where Gimli and Gandalf were. I also found Boromir's head and shoulders. . . and fitted the others in from there!

Many thanks, ladies, for your kind comments!

It's absolutely wonderful, mabreterese :D !!! Really free and exciting. I love the vibrant colours and the way the shapes mix and blend in the rush of it all. It's hugely successful and it looks as though it was great fun to paint :clapping: . Wow - your really getting the hang of the medium.

Thanks again! I did have a lot of fun with it. Waking up each morning to see how it had dried and then deciding where to take it next, that kind of thing . . I particularly enjoyed the spattering around the rocks - so messy!!

And indicative of capturing the moment. Every time I come back to read a comment and look at the painting again it makes me want to pull out my watercolors. :D

My mother used to say if you really do want to hear it I'll tell you.

Well, it's called children and a husband. While I work only part time I finish when school gets out. I spend all my time doing for someone else. That's it ladies...that's my life right now. Even if I found a suitable place in my house to put up a canvas or lay down a sheet of cold pressed watercolor paper someone would need something.

I'm going to wallow in self pity now. Carry on....
