To The Professor on the occasion of his birthday:
There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Iluvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made . . . . "Of the theme that I have declared to you, I will now that ye make in harmony together a Great Music. And since I have kindled you with the Flame Imperishable, ye shall show forth your powers in adorning this theme, each with his own thoughts and devices . . . . Behold your Music!"
Thank you, dear Professor, for sharing with us the Music of your Thought.

Love, Lindariel and Meliel

A host of Hobbits
under the party tree
We lift our glass January day 3
I being a new hobbit from a corner
of the Shire, Look forward to toasting
you Professor and hope for another hundred three
for thee.
my heart sings with thanks for the Lord of the Rings
You will never grow old as long as there are tales
to be told

The Professor

Mom and I toasted Professor Tolkien with a glass of Beringer's White Zinfandel. Mom even took a sip. :D

History became legend. Legend became myth. May his stories never die.

I would with the beleaguered fools be told,
that keep an inner fastness where their gold,
impure and scanty, yet they loyally bring
to mint in image blurred of distant king,
or in fantastic banners weave the sheen
heraldic emblems of a lord unseen.

(from "Mythopoeia", by J. R. R. Tolkien)

The Professor: with gratitude for the golden image!
Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

Jonick and I toasted the Professor at 9pm last night in cranberry juice and water resepctively. We even made a point of facing West . . . !!
"Torment in the dark was the danger that I feared, and it did not hold me back.
But I would not have come, had I known the danger of light and joy."

I faced North (by accident and not very auspicious  ) and had a nice Bailey's - any excuse to use it up after Christmas! It's great to think of so many other people sharing that moment.

I love all your dedications :D .
Now let the song begin! Let us sing together
Of sun, stars, moon and mist, rain and cloudy weather...
