Oooo, I love the white trees! They are lovely paintings!
I like the writing on the tree, that's a nice touch. What is written on there?

EV, those would be the historic words Aragorn/Elessar spoke (and Viggo sang) at his coronation:
Et Earello Endorenna utulien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn' Ambar-metta!
Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come. In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world.
Aragorn chose to repeat the words spoken by Elendil when he arrived by ship to Middle-earth after the destruction of Numenor. Highly fitting that they should appear enscribed on the White Tree in this lovely painting!

That's lovely, Riv - I particularly like the Elvish design at the top and the light shining through the clouds!

I love the view! It puts us in the position of Bilbo, I think, looking from his little bedroom. It also captures a kind of fall feeling and light outside, which I like. I think you were trying to do something fallish with the vine around the outside of the window, which is the only thing I don't like as much: the tan color doesn't add anything to the composition. IMHO, of course!

Actually Merry, my thought was that the leaves would be carved wood for the window frame. Like you...not sure about the effect.

Oh!

I can see that now. I thought you were going for a kind of inside=outside thing. Sorry about that!

A beautiful view Riv!

I really like how the leaves frame the window. I guess you could try them in a different color, but they work for me as they are.

I am working on a new version. We'll see how it turns out.

I like this one too. The wooden leaves idea is a good one if you can figure a way to replicate wood. One idea is to remove the center stripe on all the leaves. Natural leaves have this to some degree but wood would not (oh what a great tree word pun!). Removing the stripe though may make it two dimensional.
Terrific start though.

While we're waiting to see Riv's revised "Window on Rivendell", I might as well post the painting I finished last weekend . . . it went wrong from the very beginning and continued going wrong until the very end
(sigh). So at least it's consistent

and it did teach me a lot!!

It may have gone wrong marbretherese, but its still vibrant and alive. I love what you are doing in your technique with people.
I am learning the hard way that I am better off letting the watercolor do its thing rather than forcing it to do something the medium is not capable of doing.
You are light years ahead of me in this and so I am returning to the classroom next week for more lessons.

thanks Riv! trouble is, if you let the watercolour do it's thing you end up with something totally different to what you intended. This was supposed to be a landscape . . . with no people in it at all
I'm also in the classroom once a week at the moment, doing Life Drawing. Lots of charcoal and messy fingers . . . but watercolour's still my favourite medium!
