Well Philipa, if no one else will chime in, I'll answer.

The person fussing about "idle toss-pots" is none other than Galion, Thranduil's butler, when some of the elves who came to push the "empty" barrels into the river claimed that some were still full. And they were -- full of dwarves!

Where did these words originate?
Yea, I will drink thy blood gladly, that so I may forget the blood of Beleg my master, and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly. I will slay thee swiftly.

This is Beleg's famous talking sword, isn't it? (Gotta love those talking swords! )

Correct, Merry! Those are the words of Gurthang, Iron of Death, one of the two "black" swords forged by Eol the Dark Elf. Its original name was Anglachel, and its original owner was Beleg. Turin killed Beleg when Beleg was rescuing him, mistaking Beleg for an enemy. These are the words of Gurthang before Turin threw himself upon the blade, finally ending his cursed life.

Your turn!

Who said, "Who are these miserable persons?"

Yes, it is! Rather articulate for a goblin, don't you think?

Riv, that sounds very much like our impetuous Pippin with his endless stream of questions.

You've got it Philipa! :D He was speaking to Gandalf and trying to get information on where they are going and how far they will travel after leaving Isengard and Helm's Deep after the battle there and after receiving the palantir from Saruman. :D

You're up.

I'm glad I won but happier you've told me what the quote was from. :D

OK, who said:
I think Frodo, that maybe you will not need to come back, unless you come very soon. For about this time of the year, when the leaves are gold before they fall, look for Bilbo in the wood of the Shire. I shall be with him.
