Taking a stab in the dark, is this Thorin at the gate?

No serinde, unfortunately it is the wrong place, wrong time, and wrong species of speaker.

For this one you have to think of a dark time in a desterate place and someone whose demeanor and outlook is as bleak as can be. The speaker is a man, but he is not speaking to men.

Is this all you have returned to say? Or can it be that you have withdrawn because you are overmatched?
:-k I'm thinking Wormtongue to Eowyn. Why...cause I've got nothing else.

Sorry...nope. You're too far north.

Riv, I'm just taking a wild stab without checking any sources, but is this Hurin speaking to Morgoth? Can't think of anyone whose outlook and demeanor could possibly have been bleaker!

Sorry...wrong timeline Lindariel. Think about the bleakest outlook in Gondor during the War of the Ring.

Another wild guess....Witch King to Gandalf?

Ack! Of course -- its Denethor to Gandalf! The full quote is:
Then, Mithrandir, you had a foe to match you . . . . For myself, I have long known who is the chief captain of the hosts of the Dark Tower. Is this all that you have returned to say? Or can it be that you have withdrawn because you are overmatched?
I checked all the battles I could think of in LOTR and couldn't find this quote, but completely forgot about the battle of wills between Gandalf and Denethor! A GREAT question, Riv! Kept us all stumped for a while!

Here's the next "Who Said It?" (Level 1)
I could eat anything in the wide world now, for hours on end -- but not an apple!

I know that this was one of the dwarves, after they escaped from Thranduil's caves in apple barrels. But I'll have to guess which one: maybe Fili/Kili, since they seemed to be the only ones with senses of humor?

Right you are, Merry! It was Fili. Here is the full quote:
I hope I never smell the smell of apples again! . . . My tub was full of it. To smell apples everlastingly when you can scarcely move and are cold and sick with hunger is maddening. I could eat anything in the wide world now, for hours on end -- but not an apple!
Your turn!

I think this might be level 2:
'This kingdom thou shalt not take for thine own, wrongfully, for many others have laboured here no less than thou.'

Merry this is from the Hobbit correct?

The speech reminds me of Bard. :-k

Philipa, it sounds to me to be a little too profound for the Hobbit. The use of 'thou' and 'thine' lead me to think it is Valar-speak. :-k

I have read this quite recently.....in The Silmarillion, I'm sure: it is spoken to Melkor....must be by Manwë...but I can't think of the exact context.

Chrissiejane, you're right. It's when Melkor decided he wanted to be the ruler of Arda, but Manwe put a stop to that--for the time being!

Your turn!
