I think it was Mippin, that is, Merry or Pippin, although I can't remember which. Probably Merry.

Well, if not Merry, then Pippin?

Thanks, serinde. It does seem more like a Merry thing to say, a bit more sensible than Pippin.
Who said, "I hope I never smell the smell of apples again!"?

"It is long and sad, for it tells how sorrow came upon Lothlorien, Lorien of the Blossom, when the Dwarves awakened evil in the mountains."

Yes, indeed, well done, serinde! I was thinking that it's time to try to get to know these dwarves better as individuals!
This is just a guess, but I think your line might have been spoken by Legolas, talking about the story of Nimrodel?

yes, merry, you are correct
your point about the dwarves is well taken ~~ I find I do not distinguish among the thirteen very well (beyond the young ones, Fili & Kili, and the fat one, Bombur, and Gloin as the father of Gimli)

I can also remember Balin as one who is at least somewhat fair and friendly to Bilbo, but the rest are a bit of a blur!
Who said, "You have nice manners for a thief and a liar"?

Ah, yes, Merry, Merry -- that would be Smaug, the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities. I am REALLY looking forward to that scene in the upcoming Hobbit movies, especially knowing that it will be between Martin Freeman's Bilbo and Benedict Cumberbatch's Smaug. Given the amazing on-screen chemistry those two have established in the new Sherlock series, I think that interaction is going to be completely delicious!
Next question:
Who said, "Great elephants! You are not at all yourself this morning -- you have never dusted the mantelpiece!"
