Ahem, got an error, because the comma gets included in the auto-select URL, as the space before it wasn´t in the original ... I´ve added it in the quote myself on purpose ...

Elegaer wrote:*facepalm* I forget that people don't know who I am. yes, I guess I'm an artist, I've just been organising the Oxonmoot art show and tearing out my hair in the process. My website is
www.marquista.com, there's most of my Tolkien art on there.
But I have ideas ... Oxonmoot gave me inspiration ...!
Oooooo very cool artwork. Love your site too. I love that Celtic flare!
Welcome to MeJ.

Oh, I love it! Your vegetation is your best skill, RR--beautiful. And there is a skep by the lavender! That will produce very fine honey!
I realize now, though, that I've always thought of Crickhollow as a house, not a hobbit hole. Was I wrong? Or is this a house with a sod roof?

Merry, Tolkien describes it as a house...
It had been built a long while before by the Brandybucks, for the use of guests or members of the family that wished to escape from the crowded life of Brandy Hall for a time. It was an old-fashioned countryfide house, as much like a hobbit-hole as possible: it was long and low, with no upper story; and it had a roof of turf, round windows and a large round door.
ETA: I am not very happy at how the colors from the original translated to the png image. I may have to play with the colors a bit.

Oh, good--thanks for the quote. I had forgotten the detail of the roof.
It's interesting to think of Crickhollow in this wholesome way, since I usually think of it as the site of one of most terrifying scenes in LOTR: the attack of the Ringwraiths on poor Fatty!

I have always thought that Frodo bought it for a better reason.

Yes--but my memory is vague on this. Didn't Frodo plan to live there on the unlikely event that he returned from Mordor? And didn't Mippin live there after they returned?

I do remember that Frodo moved all his furnishings there when he sold Bag End to the Sackville Bagginses.
And...you are correct...from the EoA...
The house at Crickhollow was not forgotten when the Travellers returned from the southern lands. For a time, they even considered resting there before riding on into the Shire itself, but the ruin caused by Sharkey put an end to those plans. After Sharkey was destroyed, Frodo Baggins found himself once more the owner of Bag End. Unneeded by its owner, the house at Crickhollow was shared by Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took for a time.

Riv, that's lovely! I'd have caught up here much sooner if I'd realised that there was a new Riv original to look at! I love the way it is a 'hobbitholehouse' - something quite hard to visualise. Single story turf roof cottages used to be common in remote areas of Wales, Scotland and Ireland, but no where near as capacious as Crickhollow and they usually contained all the cows and goats along with the family

.
I love the little beehive, the fishing gear and the sunflowers. It's all in the detail. It's great to see you painting again

I hadn't realised there was a new painting lurking amongst the posts here either - I think it's lovely, Riv! it has a touch of the Beatrix Potter about it, without being too 'cute-sy'. Great use of colour and tone, too!
