From my favorite children's Christmas program:

Welcome Christmas, bring your cheer,
Cheer to all Whos (and MeJ members) far and near.
Christmas Day is in our grasp,
So long as we have hands to clasp.
Welcome Christmas, while we stand
Heart to heart, and hand in hand.
Christmas Day will always be
Just as long as we have we.

A happy and healthy holiday season to all!

Well, I've finally finished my long promised Lothlorien painting. Sorry it took so long! It was a combination of lack of time and having a vision of the centre of the painting that I wasn't sure I knew how to make work. Anyway, here it is:

Lothlorien

And here come the usual explantations. It is, of course, Galadriel and Aragorn after she has given him the Elfstone, which he has pinned to his breast. The Ring is still present (seen in the trees between them) but it's power is reduced and it's barely visible. There isn't any sign of Sauron's presence there, only the leaves of Lorien masking it from his sight.

The Flets are there, but also barely visible, ringing the central tree. In the middle of the Ring they are reflected back, as though in a mirror, and are much clearer.

There are small elanor in Gladriel's crown and around the arm of her dress.

Hope you like it!!! I won't point out the bits that gave me a lot of grief  .

Iolanthe! This is wonderful, your best one yet, in my opinion. I love the Elessar and Aragorn's worn face. I hope you put this one up for sale at the VW market--I predict lots of takers!

it's beautiful, Iolanthe, and my favourite of yours so far . . . I love the subtle colours, and the leaves, and - well - everything!!!

Reading Humphrey Carpenter's biog of JRRT this morning, the following passage (JRRT talking about his vision for an 'English' mythology) struck me as v relevant to this thread:
The cycles [ie the tales] should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama.
More please!!

Thank you all! I'm very glad you like it :D .

The Tolkien quote is a very important one, I think. He wanted his creation to evolve just like the myths and stories of old. He created an artificial 'evolution' within his own work - oral stories, several prose and poetic versions of tales (Beren and Luthien), the Red Book, later copies of the Red Book held in Gondor, LOTR itself. This is just another evolution of his creation and a testament to it's enduring power. I do believe it's what he envisaged, as long as we never lose sight of his vision.

Very beautifully done Iolanthe. I really do like how the ring and flets (also rings) are muted. Very very nicely done. :D

I always wanted to be collected  .

Philipa, I'm glad you noticed the Flets are also rings - I did want a visual parallel there which is why I wanted to keep them simple and hidden like the concealed Rings of the Elves. Well spotted!
