Sorry for the delay I was in Oxford and so busy with scholars and friends, getting to a computer was a bit tricky.
As to the answer, at the end of the first age it was Elros who chose to be counted among men and established Numenor. His brother Elrond established Rivendell.
In a bit of trivia, Lewis and Tolkien referred to the pub, The Eagle and Child as the babe and the bird. While having a lovely pint I looked up at the slate advertising such wines as Elderberry and Rasberry. I told the barkeeper about the misspelling. "That's how is spelled mate, at least here," he replied.
The professor would have it it otherwise, considering that he did aid in creating the Oxford dictionary of English.

I knew this happened in the second age and it was the war against Sauron in Eraidor (I had to look up the year) 1697. I can give you more if you want it.

Philipa, I was looking for the name of the Elven city that fell in the Second Age causing the migration to Rivendell.

One such city that comes to mind is Eregion, the city that fell under the pall of Sauron who forced Celebrimbor to give up his secrets of the rings of power.
Another guess would be Las Vegas, but then again keeping a metropolis alive in the midst of the dessert based on gambling would need the skills of Elves to keep it from utter ruin.

As for the Elves liking Las Vegas I bet you're right. You know how the loved the lights at night.

I think they would have looked for Las Vegas in Mordor.
