Agree on all accounts: I like his palette, I don't like Bilbo's nose, and the style seems appropriate for The Hobbit. Fun! One of his titles has 'dwarfs' as the plural of 'dwarf', though, which Tolkien would have disputed!
I have a feeling that PJ's vision for the movies will be more realistic, though. It would be good for artists to set their vision of it all before being overly influenced by the movies.

Sing and be glad, all ye children of the West,
for your King shall come again,
and he shall dwell among you
all the days of your life.

I've seen his work before somewhere, but not so much of it. I especially love his illustration of all the dwarves at Bag End. And he's made Gandalf's hat blue, just as it should be for The Hobbit! Very good work.
Thanks for the extra links, Marbretherese

I bought a copy of the three-volume paperback graphic novel soon after it came out; that would be about 1990, I think. Then followed a copy of the one-volume paperback, and (because I like hardbacks) a copy of the one-volume h/b, with a very nice gilt decoration on the front board.
The picture of Smaug vs. Thorin and co. appears on the covers of the third p/b volume. It's a wrap-around illustration, and very effective. Of course, this scene doesn't appear exactly like this in the book; and in the graphic novel we see the dragon spouting fire onto the mountain-side just after the dwarves and Bilbo have gone inside. The ponies are seen running in fear.
I recommend this book; as an adaptation of Tolkien's story it works very well, with great chunks of Tolkien's writing in comic strip form. Thanks for reminding me of it, and prompting me to get these books off my shelves.

I might have guessed that you'd have a copy of the graphic novel, Geordie! thanks for the information.

Here's a link from TOR.n that might inspire our artists in regard to Hobbit art:

A Sendak version would have been wonderful! I particularly like the Bard picture in this.

Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise can not see all ends.
